Anonymous: you seem like a smart guy, so tell me how did you tell your family you were gay? My friends know but not my Mom, Dad or grandparents.

I was never given the opportunity to do so. I went over my texting bill one month so my dad threatened me that he would go on my Verizon account online and read my text messages. I didn’t believe you could do this, but in fact you can. Caution to all Verizon users. So I’m not exactly sure what he read, but one day in school my sister pulled me aside and told me that my dad called her and asked her if there was something I needed to tell him. I came home to an hour long interrogation, which was really stupid now that I think about it.

But honestly, if you’re thinking about coming out to your parents, I think you should do it if you care about having a good open and honest relationship with your parents. If you can still have that while lying to them, then go for it. But if you know your parents are conservative then don’t do it. They could do stupid things like restricting you from hanging out with certain people or not being able to go certain places because they don’t know how to deal with a gay child properly so they ban certain things thinking that’s the cause of your gayness.

Wait until you have your own freedom before you tell them. It makes everything easier and simpler, and a lot less awkward and complicated.
